SAP, like many other companies, had times when they experienced difficulties in developing innovation internally. A few years ago, there was a group that was involved in developing cloud technologies within the company. Financial backing was there, but not strong enough to cover all necessary aspects, i.e. the go to market. The product was good, but not well enough tuned to the demand in the market and grew too slowly. The company saw the imperative to become a major cloud player and to get there, the company had to look outside and acquire cloud- vendors. The company invested more than 15 billion US Dollars into three big and several small cloud companies. The strategy: fill white spots in your portfolio. Today, Luka fosters innovation mainly internally again. This is taking on multiple forms.
